The Life and Training of Beizan Miwada
Born in 1821 in Aichi pref., Beizan Miwada spent his life navigating the quiet duties of a Shinto priest in Matsuyama. His training was rooted in the classical traditions of his time. He studied Japanese classical literature under Takamasa Ookuni, gaining a deep familiarity with the written word. This literary foundation was paired with technical discipline as he studied calligraphy under Hakugan Kusaka. These studies provided the structure for a life spent among ink and paper.
There was a certain looseness to his practice that defied the rigid expectations of his station. In his own diary, Beizan Miwada noted that he could not perform calligraphy without alcohol. This habit was not merely a personal preference but a central part of his creative process . He was known for producing uniquely wild pieces when under the influence of drink. These works emerged from a state of being that favored a more uninhibited expression than his formal training might suggest.
Artistic Style and Calligraphic Technique
Miwada’s brushwork carries a certain weight, moving between a serene elegance and a more unrestrained energy. His compositions often find a balance through understated tonal variations, where the ink settles on the paper in controlled, deliberate strokes. There is a specific tension in his work; while his pieces appear calm, they possess a dynamic quality that feels unique to his hand. This movement is often most visible in his more spontaneous creations, where the ink flows with a wildness that suggests a departure from strict formality.
His technique reveals a deep commitment to the traditions of Japanese calligraphy. He pays close attention to the fine details of character construction, ensuring that each stroke respects established conventions. This precision is paired with a sense of rhythm that guides the eye across the paper. Even in his more expressive moments, the structural integrity of the characters remains intact, showing a disciplined approach to the medium. His work often reflects the quietude of Shinto aesthetics, using space and ink to create a sense of stillness.

Notable Works and Symbolic Themes
The brushwork often carries the weight of spiritual intention. In 1897, Miwada created Fuku, part of a set of three hanging scrolls titled ‘Fukurokujyu (Happiness, Salary and Longevity)’. These scrolls, measuring 121x51 cm, focus on the Chinese Taoist deity and one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods. The Ehime Museum of Art holds a triptych of these Fukurokuju figures, rendered in sumi ink on paper . Such works seek to bring happiness, fortune, and long life into a space through the arrangement of characters.
His hand also left marks on the physical structures of sacred spaces. At Tsukushima Shrine, he inscribed the characters “nenpojinraku” onto the pillars, a phrase meaning "people delight in a rich harvest." This connection to the land and its cycles is a recurring presence in his output. Even in smaller pieces, the themes of prosperity and the natural world remain central to his practice.
There is a tangible presence in his calligraphy that has found its way into international auction houses. His pieces have seen bids ranging from $462 to $774, showing a steady interest in his specific way of handling the brush. Whether working on large hanging scrolls or smaller compositions, the focus remains on the balance of the character and the meaning it carries.
