The Life and Journey of Charles Bridges

Charles Bridges was an English painter and missionary who traveled to the British colony of Virginia, where he was active from 1735 to 1744. Born in Northamptonshire, he was the son of John Bridges and Elizabeth Trumbull Bridges. A member of the gentry, Bridges was well-educated and worked for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in London from 1699 to 1713. After arriving in Williamsburg in 1735, he lived for a period at Westover Plantation with William Byrd II. His time in the colonies included discussions regarding a charity to teach Christianity to Virginia's African-American community. Bridges eventually moved to Hanover County before returning to England, where he died in his native Northamptonshire.

Artistic Style and Documented Works

As the first documented painter known to have worked in Virginia, Bridges' technique is characterized by specific mannerisms. He utilized broad brushstrokes to delineate hair, faces, and fabrics, while rendering eyes with careful precision. His color palette was typically muted, frequently employing red to define shadows. His compositions often featured subjects looking directly at the viewer with their heads and figures turned slightly to one side.

While many attributions remain uncertain because Bridges did not sign his work, several portraits are documented with certainty, including:

  • A portrait of Thomas Baker, currently in the collection of the University of Oxford.
  • A portrait of William Gooch.
  • A portrait of Mrs. Mann Page II and Child, held by the College of William and Mary.

Beyond portraiture, Bridges was recorded in 1740 as having drawn the King's Arms for the use of the Caroline County Court.
