The Visual Language of Music

Ellen Banks was an American painter and musician who developed a unique method of translating musical scores into multimedia compositions. Working on canvas, wood, handmade paper, or textiles, she approached the musical score as a visual and structural phenomenon. Her process involved a specific color system where each note corresponded to a color based on the alphabetical order of notes and the prismatic scale: A was red, B was orange, C was yellow, D was green, E was indigo, F was violet, and G was neutral. Interestingly, she often worked without listening to the music, focusing instead on the visual relationships and patterns within the notation.

Her artistic evolution saw a shift from the early use of oil painting to a more systematic transcription of scores. In the early 1980s, her work was characterized by clear structures and strictly geometric forms. Over time, her approach evolved from this rigid transcription toward a freer, more subjective interpretation, using the music as a catalyst for personal expression. Her repertoire included works inspired by classical composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, and Scarlatti, as well as jazz and popular music.

Career and Recognition

Based in Brooklyn for much of her career, Banks was a teacher of painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1974 to 1996. Her work has been featured in various galleries across the United States and Europe, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Galerie Spandow. Throughout her career, she received several honors, including a Ford Foundation grant, a Bunting fellowship from Radcliff College, a Painting Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Book Grant from Nexus Press.
