The Life and Art of Ryōzen

Ryōzen, also known as Ryōzen (良全) or Ryōsen (良詮), was a Buddhist painter and monk active during the Kamakura and Nanbokuchō periods in Japan. While some theories suggest he may have originated from Kyushu or Bohai—based on the inscription Kaiseijin (海西人) found on his works—he is most strongly associated with the Tōfuku-ji temple. His career represents a transitional era in Japanese art history, bridging the gap between the ancient style of the ebushi (painter-monks) and the more medieval style of the Zen monk-painters.

His artistic repertoire was diverse, encompassing both Buddhist paintings and ink wash paintings. Ryōzen’s technique involved utilizing traditional patterns, such as those of Li Longmian, while simultaneously incorporating newly introduced Chinese Buddhist painting and ink wash methods. His work is noted for its connection to Tōfuku-ji, often featuring inscriptions by Kenpō Jisen, and many of his pieces serve as imitations of the temple's existing paintings.
