The Formative Years and Artistic Evolution
Victor Man is a Romanian-born painter born in 1974. His academic journey began at the Academia de Arte Plastice Ioan Andreescu in Cluj, where he studied for two years before moving to Jerusalem to study between 2000 and 2004. During his time in Jerusalem, he lived at the Monastère de Sainte Claire, where he primarily painted from nature within the monastery garden. After returning to Cluj to complete his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2004, his technical approach underwent a significant transformation. He moved away from the observational au premier coup style of his student years toward a more methodical and conceptually charged process of painting.
Style and Recognition
Man’s work is characterized by a preference for dark colors and a layering of time that creates a sense of reminiscence. His paintings often explore themes of uncertainty, including transitions between human and animal, organic and artificial, and face and mask. His iconography frequently intermingles literary references with his own biography, blurring the lines between fiction and reality.
His professional achievements include:
His works are held in various public collections, including TATE Modern in London, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and SFMOMA in San Francisco. He is represented by galleries such as David Zwirner Gallery, Gladstone Gallery, and Galerie Max Hetzler.
