Early Life, Family and Training
August Schiøtt arrived in the world in Helsingør, Denmark, born to Heinrich Erpecum Schiøtt and Anna Sophie Marie Fleron. His father served as a customs official, providing a stable foundation for a young man whose inclinations would eventually lead him away from the administrative life and toward the pursuit of fine art . After completing his schooling in Copenhagen, August Schiøtt sought to refine his natural talents within the walls of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His time at the Academy was marked by a quiet, steady progression rather than sudden academic brilliance, yet it provided the essential discipline required for a professional life in painting.
During his formative years at the Academy, he spent much of his time in the plaster school. Here, he learned the fundamental language of form by drawing from classical sculptures, a practice that grounded his understanding of light and shadow . This rigorous training was further enriched by his time as a private student of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg . Under such guidance, the young painter began to develop the technical precision that would define his later career. By the time he completed his studies, he had already begun to test his skill, producing his first portrait of a child in 1844, two years before his formal graduation from the Academy.
Portraiture and Royal Commissions
The artist found his true calling in the faces of others, developing a steady hand that would eventually lead him to the most prestigious circles of Denmark. He was a frequent presence at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition, where he presented over 150 portraits to the public. His ability to capture the likeness of his subjects earned him the trust of the monarchy. He painted the royal family on several occasions, including three portraits of Caroline Amalie of Augustenburg. His brush also met the likenesses of Prince Ferdinand, Princess Caroline, and the young Prince Christian, who would later ascend to the throne as King.
Beyond the palace walls, his reputation grew through his depictions of the nobility and the influential figures of his age. He captured the character of Baron Carl Frederik Blixen-Finecke, a man who would become the grandfather-in-law of the writer Karen Blixen. His talent for capturing human presence extended to the military and the intellectual elite, as seen in his portraits of General Gerhard Christoph von Krogh and the history painter J.L. Lund. These commissions reflected a man who moved easily between the rigid requirements of formal portraiture and the intimate study of individual character.
Artistic Style and Subject Matter
His brush moved with a refined realism that sought to capture the true essence of his subjects. While he possessed the technical skill to render the dignity of the nobility, he found a particular grace in the simpler moments of life. He was known for his naturalistic depictions of children at play, capturing their innocence with a sensitive touch. This ability to observe the world closely allowed him to move beyond mere likeness, finding the spirit within the form.
Beyond the quietude of domestic life , he turned his attention to more profound and dramatic themes. He composed numerous figure compositions, including the solemnity of Christ at Gethsemane , which demonstrated his capacity for handling heavy, spiritual narratives. He also found interest in the everyday struggles and joys of the common people, painting genre scenes of peasant life that reflected the social fabric of his time. His curiosity was not confined to the familiar landscapes of Denmark; when he traveled to Southern Europe, Egypt, and Palestine, he filled his sketchbooks with the light and people of those distant lands.

Later Years and Death
As the years passed, Schiøtt’s standing within the Danish art establishment grew steadily. His talent and dedication were recognized by the Academy, which named him a member in 1854. This professional ascent continued through the decades, leading to his appointment as a titular professor in 1866. Such honors reflected a life spent deeply embedded in the academic and social fabric of the nation's artistic life.
In 1880, he received the Order of the Dannebrog, a distinction that marked his high status in the eyes of the crown. His later years were marked by a continued presence in the public eye, even as his focus occasionally shifted toward the sketches he made during travels to Southern Europe, Egypt, and Palestine. He remained a figure of significance until his passing in 1895 at Hellebæk. He was laid to rest in the Garrison Cemetery in Copenhagen, leaving behind a legacy that included his daughter, Elisabeth Schiøtt, who followed his path into the world of painting.
