Derailing Beirut
This installation, consisting of a capsule in the form of a bomb with space for one person, was presented at the MAXXI as part of the exhibition Spazio (2010). It is a prototype to be used by a hypothetical tourist who takes an ideal roller coaster ride through the ruins of Beirut. For Bernard Khoury this action reiterates a personal refusal of West’s exotic view of the war in Lebanon, and more generally in the Middle East. The link between a weapon and the Western tourist searching for a powerful emotional experience critically emphasises how both belong to the categories of an extrinsic prevaricate system of power that privileges the maintenance of the status quo. Both are linked by a component of danger coupled with a capacity to disfigure the city in its form and aspirations.
