Born in Utrecht, his artistic journey began with formal training at the Municipal Drawing School in Utrecht between 1858 and 1860. Following a brief period working for a lithographer, Neuhuys turned his full devotion toward the canvas. His early academic pursuits took him to the Antwerp Academy from 1868 to 1872, where a royal stipend allowed him to refine his technical prowess. During these formative years in Antwerp, he developed a profound fascination with interior scenes, specifically mastering the delicate play of light upon the sheen of satin fabrics, drawing inspiration from the legendary seventeenth-century master Pieter de Hooch.
