A life in brief

Carl Peter Goebel arrived in the world in 1794 in Randersacker, near Wuerzburg, Germany. His time spent under the sun was short, lasting only twenty-nine years before his death in 1823. He moved from his German roots to study at the Vienna Academy, a place where he learned to handle oil on canvas with a steady hand. By 1816, his name began appearing in exhibition records, marking the start of a career that would be cut short by his early passing.

His work carries the quiet weight of the Viennese Neoclassical style and the Biedermeier period. In these paintings, one sees a focus on clarity and the careful arrangement of figures. He did not seek to overwhelm with movement, but rather to capture a specific stillness found in religious scenes and portraits.

The brush and the subject

Goebel’s hand was often turned toward the sacred and the personal. In 1820, he completed Jacob blesses the sons of Joseph, a large-scale work measuring 190 cm in height and 240 cm in width. This piece, held now in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, shows his ability to manage complex biblical narratives within a structured, classical framework. He also turned his attention to the people around him, capturing faces with a directness that feels intimate.

His portraits often feature specific individuals from his era:

  • Rosalia Klieber: Painted in 1819, this work depicts the wife of the sculptor Josef Klieber.
  • Portrait of a Lady: A piece from 1822 that reflects the Biedermeier preference for domestic and personal subjects.
  • Selbstbildnis: A self-portrait from around 1819, showing how he viewed his own place as a painter.

A lasting presence in collections

Though his life ended in 1823, the physical traces of his work remain in significant institutions. Much of what survives has been housed within the Kunsthistorisches Museum and is now part of the Belvedere collection in Vienna. These paintings, such as his 1819 portrait of Rosalia Klieber, continue to exist as tangible links to the early 19th-century German and Austrian art scene. His ability to execute both large religious compositions and smaller, more delicate portraits ensures that his technical skill is still visible in the halls of these museums.
