His presence in the London art scene became established through his membership in the Free Society of Artists. His life was tied to the shifting spaces of the era, moving from Old Ford, near Bow, into the heart of London. This movement mirrored the changing nature of his output, as he navigated the demands of portraiture and the technical requirements of engraving. He was part of a family of artists; his son, D. P. Dodd, and his daughter both exhibited with the Free Society of Artists starting in 1768.
