The Life and Travels of Hans Bohler

Born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, Hans Bohler was a painter and graphic artist who pursued his artistic education at the Jaschke private art school in Vienna. Although he passed the entrance exam for the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1904, he chose to remain at the private school instead. His early career saw him participating in the spring exhibition of the Vienna Secession in 1908 and exhibiting with the Neukunstgruppe at the Salon Pisko in 1909. He later became a member of the Austrian Werkbund, for which he designed postcards, and exhibited with the Vienna Secession starting in 1920.

Bohler’s life was marked by extensive global travel. Between 1910 and 1911, he journeyed through Russia, Siberia, China, Japan, and India, followed by travels to South and North America from 1913 to 1914. His professional life took him through Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Spain, England, Denmark, Norway, and Africa. He resided in the Ticino region from 1918 to 1923, with a home in Niederwil, Switzerland. From 1936 to 1950, he lived in the United States before returning to Vienna. In 1954, he was awarded the City of Vienna Prize for Painting and Graphics and received the title of Professor.
