Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Henri Rul was a painter and printmaker who dedicated much of his career to capturing the essence of the landscape. He was also known for his depictions of the dunes and he occasionally worked as a marinist. Beyond his paintings, Rul was an etcher, presenting several original etchings at the International Exhibition of Brussels.

He was a founding member of the artistic circle Als ik Kan and participated in the first exhibition of the group Les XIII. Notably, he exhibited at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and received a gold medal at the Bordeaux Exhibition in 1903.

The technique of Henri Rul evolved through his studies at the Academy of Drawing in Middelburg and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
