Early Life and Family Background
Born in Galway City in 1794, Joseph Patrick Haverty grew up in a setting that would eventually shape his perspective as a painter. His early talent began to find its footing in 1814, when he sent a painting to the Hibernian Society of Artists. This act of sharing his work marked his first significant recognition in the art world, signaling the start of a life dedicated to capturing the likenesses and scenes around him.
Family life played a central role in his personal history. In 1816, he married Maria, a woman originally from County Mayo. Together, they raised numerous children, all of whom were born in Galway. His family connections also extended into the literary world through his step brother, Martin Haverty, who became an author. These early years in Galway provided the foundation for a man who would spend much of his life navigating the social and artistic circles of Ireland.
Professional Career and Artistic Activity
Haverty’s professional life was defined by a steady rise through the ranks of the Irish art establishment. After his early recognition in 1814, he became an Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1823. His standing grew until he was elected a full Member of the Academy on 6 May 1829. However, his relationship with the institution was not permanent; he eventually resigned from the Royal Hibernian Academy in October 1837.
His work took him across several cities as he sought out patrons. While he resided principally in Dublin, he also followed his profession in Limerick, where he received a significant amount of patronage. He spent many years traveling to London from time to time, expanding his reach beyond Ireland. His ability to capture the likeness of his subjects was well-recognized, as evidenced by his frequent presence in major exhibitions. Between 1835 and 1858, he exhibited twenty-seven portraits at the Royal Academy.
His output was varied, moving between genre scenes, landscapes, and portraits. He was particularly noted for his ability to handle lithography, producing several lithographed reproductions of his own work. His skill in portraiture allowed him to paint notable figures of the era, including Daniel O’Connell.
Key Works and Notable Subjects
Haverty had a particular talent for capturing the faces of people who shaped the social and political landscape of his time. He was often called upon to paint portraits of significant figures, including the author Richard Robert Madden and the Young Irelander Thomas McNevin. His brush also met the likeness of Richard Lalor Sheil. He found a steady subject in Daniel O'Connell, painting several portraits of the man that helped define his public image.
Beyond the faces of political and literary figures, Haverty’s work often touched on the quiet, human moments of daily life. One of his most widely recognized pieces was his 1844 work, The Limerick Piper. This piece became a famous lithograph during the 19th century, focusing on Patrick O'Brien, a blind Gaelic piper from Labasheeda. Through this work, Haverty brought the image of the musician into the broader public consciousness.
His interests also extended into religious themes and the technical possibilities of printmaking. He published lithographed reproductions of his series titled The Seven Sacraments, allowing his religious subjects to reach a wider audience than a single canvas ever could. His output was varied, moving between the formal requirements of portraiture and the more narrative qualities of genre scenes and landscapes.
Later Years and Death
The later years of Haverty's life were marked by a long and difficult illness. He spent his final days at his residence at 44 Rathmines Road in Dublin, where he faced the physical toll of edema. Despite the challenges of his health, he remained a significant figure in the Irish art community until the end.
He passed away on 27 July 1864 at the age of seventy. Following his death, he was laid to rest on 30 July 1864. His final resting place is Glasnevin Cemetery, where he was buried shortly after his passing.
