A Life Between Continents
Willem Jan Pieter van der Does was a Dutch painter, art illustrator, draftsman, and water-colorist. Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, he studied at the Rotterdam Academie van Kunst and continued his studies privately. His life was deeply connected to the Dutch East Indies, where he traveled extensively as a civil servant to survey the country, visiting locations such as Surabaya, Batavia, Medan, Malang, and Bandung.
His travels were vast, including a journey to Antarctica during 1923–1924, for which he created sketches for his book, Storm, Ijs, en Walvisschen. In 1936, he participated in the Berlin Olympics, exhibiting a painting titled "Towards the Unknown", which depicted two explorers in an Antarctic storm. This work earned him a bronze participation medal from the Olympics Committee.
Artistic Legacy and Style
Associated with the East Indies impressionist movement, van der Does collaborated with Gerard Pieter Adolfs to help establish this movement. His works were highly regarded, earning him the title "the royal painter from the Indies" due to presentations to King Leopold III of Belgium and Queen Astrid of Sweden, as well as a gift for Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.
His artistic output included:
- Illustrations for important printed books, such as the Dutch translation of Two Years Before the Mast.
- Journalistic works and newspaper illustrations in the East Indies and the Netherlands.
- Seascape paintings, such as Zeilen Door De Grote Storm, characterized by an impressionistic style and detailed brushwork.
After returning to the Netherlands in 1946, he continued to paint scenes of daily life in the East Indies from memory, often depicting Surabaya and Malang. He died in Zeist, Netherlands.
