Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Born in Nuremberg, Germany, William Frederic Ritschel began his professional journey through an apprenticeship as a lithographer. During his service in the Imperial German Navy from 1883 to 1887, he practiced decorating large seashells, including one presented to the future King Edward VII of England. Following his military service, he pursued formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, studying under Karl Raupp and Wilhelm von Kaulbach between 1888 and 1894. As the nephew of the sculptor Ernest Ritschel, he became a member of the Kunstverein München. His early works, which included seascapes and studies of horses, were exhibited throughout Germany and Paris before he sailed for New York City in November 1895.

California Career and Legacy

After moving to the United States and becoming a naturalized citizen in 1904, Ritschel eventually established a significant presence in California. He first spent a summer near Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1911, later purchasing a seasonal cottage and renting a studio in the Carmel Highlands. By 1921, he occupied a permanent home in the Highlands known as his stone castle or "eagle's nest." His paintings of the California coast and scenes from his travels to the South Seas in 1922 and 1924–25 achieved great popularity in commercial galleries. A frequent member of the Carmel Art Association, he served as president and on its board of directors. His works are held in various public collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.
