Mervin Jules (1912-1994) stands as a significant figure in American art history, particularly within the realm of Social Realism. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, his artistic journey began with formal training at Baltimore City College and culminated in a degree from the Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts. This early education laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to portraying the realities of everyday life, often focusing on the struggles and triumphs of rural communities—a commitment that cemented his place as one of the foremost practitioners of this influential artistic movement.
His formative years were profoundly shaped by the mentorship of Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League in New York City. Benton’s influence instilled Jules with a conviction to utilize art as a tool for social commentary, mirroring Benton's own commitment to depicting the hardships faced by working-class Americans during the Great Depression era. This collaboration fostered Jules’ understanding of Benton’s stylistic approach—bold brushstrokes and expressive color palettes—techniques he would later adapt into his distinctive visual language. Despite personal challenges, including the physical impact of polio contracted in his childhood which required him to use canes and braces throughout his life, Jules channeled his resilience into a prolific creative output.

In 1945, he served as an artist-in-residence at Smith College, eventually rising to lead the art department there until 1970. Later, his leadership extended to the City College of New York (CCNY), where he served as chairman of the art department from 1970 to 1980.
