Oppenberg’s artistic output was vast, with about two-thirds of his works being executed in black and white. He was known for his landscape paintings and his depictions of rural labor, earning him the nicknames "Maler des Niederrheins" and "Bauernmaler." His work often captured the essence of human and animal activity within the landscape, characterized by a linear quality that integrated subjects into their surroundings.
