Artistic Background and Education
Bertram Hasenauer is an Austrian painter and draftsperson. Born in Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer, he pursued his artistic studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1992 to 1997, where he was a student in the master class of Franz Xaver Ölzant. His academic journey continued with further studies at the University of the Arts Berlin and at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London from 1997 to 1998. Hasenauer also received an atelier scholarship for Krakow in 1999 and an Austrian state scholarship for visual arts in 2005. He has also been awarded an atelier scholarship in Paliano, Italy, in 2009. Currently, he lives and works in Berlin.
Style and Subject Matter
The focus of Hasenauer's artistic practice is the portrait and the figure. Rather than traditional likenesses, his work explores the idea of a portrait, often depicting human figures against monochrome backgrounds of white or dark tones. These figures frequently appear androgynous and seem to float in space, possessing an "over-real" quality. His compositions may also include landscapes, as well as imagery consisting of dates and lettering. In his technique, he applies color like a thin film over a finely textured ground. His subjects often present a melancholic and expectant demeanor, appearing as if they are dissolving into the vague spheres of memory.
