The Topographer of Old Antwerp
Jozef Linnig was a Belgian painter, watercolorist, engraver, art historian, and art dealer born in Antwerp. Trained at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts, he studied engraving under Erin Corr and painting under Jan Baptiste de Jonghe. He is widely recognized as the topographer of old Antwerp, having dedicated much of his life to capturing the city's various quarters and monuments. His creative process often began with meticulous pencil sketches, which he then transformed into detailed watercolours and etchings.
His artistic legacy is preserved in significant historical documentation, most notably in the 1868 publication Historisch album der stad Antwerpen: verzameling van gezichten en gedenkteekens van vroegere tyden. Co-authored with Frans Hendrik Mertens, this work features prints etched by Linnig that serve as a vital record of vanished landmarks, such as the monumental water pump on the Veemarkt.
Artistic Scholarship and Collections
Beyond his visual works, Linnig was a dedicated scholar of graphic arts. He utilized his extensive collection of contemporary Belgian and Dutch graphic art to co-author Le Peintre-Graveur hollandais et belge du XIXe siècle with Theodor Hippert. This descriptive catalogue, published between 1874 and 1879, remains a significant reference for the study of 19th-century engravers.
In 1878, Linnig donated his significant collection of prints to the city of Antwerp, a collection that is now housed within the Plantin-Moretus Museum. His diverse body of work includes:
