The Life and Art of June Leaf
June Leaf was an American visual artist whose creative practice spanned painting, drawing, and sculpture. Born in Chicago, United States, she studied ballet and later enrolled at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she took classes with Hugo Weber. Her journey took her to Paris in 1948, where she focused on identifying patterns and abstraction. After returning to the United States to earn her B.A. and M.A. degrees in Art Education from Roosevelt University and the Institute of Design, she returned to Paris on a Fulbright Grant for painting. In 1960, she moved to New York City, and by 1970, she had established a home and studio on the western coast of Cape Breton in Mabou, Nova Scotia.

Leaf's body of work is characterized by abstract allegorical paintings and drawings, as well as modernist kinetic sculpture. Her drawings, such as Coney Island, have depicted everyday scenes, while other works like The Girl with the Hoop explore motifs where the hand and head join to represent the creative process. Her sculptural work, including Making # 2, utilized materials like wire, copper, and a sewing treadle to create figures that move when the device is operated.
Her contributions to the arts have been recognized through several honors, including:
Her work is held in permanent collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. She passed away in Manhattan.
