Γεννημένος σε Πολωνούς-Εβραίους μετανάστες γονείς, τον Abraham και τη Rebecca Bomberg, μελέτησε αρχικά στη City and Guilds Technical Art School πριν ολοκληρώσει την εκπαίδευσή του ως λιθογράφος στο Birmingham.
Σπούδασε υπό την καθοδήγηση του Walter Sickert στη Westminster School of Art (1908-1910), επηρεασμένος από την εστίαση του Sickert στη μορφή και την αστική ζωή. Στη Slade, ο Bomberg ήταν μέρος μιας αξιοσημείωτης γενιάς που περιλάμβανε τον Mark Gertler, τον Stanley Spencer, τον C.R.W. Nevinson και την Dora Carrington.
Επηρ𝙚άστηκε από τις εκθέσεις των Ιταλών Φουτουριστών στο Λονδίνο το 1912 και τη δεύτερη έκθεση Post-Impressionist του Fry (Picasso, Matisse, Fauvists, Wyndham Lewis).
Ανάπτυξε ένα ιδιαίτερο στυλ που συνδύαζε τον Κουβισμό και τον Φουτουρισμό – χαρακτηριστικό από γεωμετρικές συνθέσεις, περιορισμένες παλέτες χρωμάτων, γωνιώδεις μορφές και δομές τύπου πλέγματος.
Η ριζοσπαστική του προσέγγιση οδήγησε στην εκδίωξή του από τη Slade School of Art το 1913, καθώς θεωρήθηκε υπερβολικά τολμηρή για τις συμβατικές μεθόδους του ιδρύματος.
Συνδέθηκε σύντομα με τα Omega Workshops της ομάδας Bloomsbury και έκθεσε μαζί με την Camden Town Group. Εμφάνισε συγγένεια με το Vorticist movement του Wyndham Lewis, αλλά παρέμεινε ανεξάρτητος, αρνούμενος την πλήρη συμμετοχή του.

Τα Μετέπειτα Έτη και η Κληρονομιά του
Από το 1945 έως το 1953, δίδαξε στο Borough Polytechnic (πλέον London South Bank University), επηρεάζοντας μια γενιά καλλιτεχνών που περιλάμβαναν τους Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff, Philip Holmes, Cliff Holden, Edna Mann, Dorothy Mead, Gustav Metzger, Dennis Creffield, Cecil Bailey και Miles Richmond.
Ενέδρασε γάμο με τη ζωdoγράφο τοπίου Lilian Holt.
Παρά τις περιόδους σχετικής αμβλύνσης κατά τη διάρκεια της ζωής του, το έργο του Bomberg έχει κερδίσει αυξανόμενη αναγνώριση τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες ως μια σημαντική προσφορά στην βρετανική μοντέρνα τέχνη.
Το David Bomberg House στο London South Bank University ονομάστηκε προς τιμήν του.
