Life and Artistic Training
Alma Erdmann was a German painter and illustrator. Her artistic education began under Caspar Ritter in Karlsruhe, followed by studies in Düsseldorf with Hugo Crola and Claus Meyer. During this era, women were not permitted to study at the art academies in Karlsruhe or Düsseldorf, though some professors provided private lessons or accepted female students into private classes.
Erdmann was a member of several organizations, including the Karlsruher Künstlerbund, the Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft, and the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste during the period of National Socialism. Her work was exhibited in various venues, such as the Kunstverein Hannover, the Berlin Academy exhibition, and the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe.
Artistic Style and Notable Works
Specializing in oil on canvas, Erdmann is primarily known for her folkloric portraits. Her oeuvre is dominated by scenes featuring women dressed in the traditional folk costume of the Black Forest, often set within peasant cottages. Her paintings are characterized by detail realism and contemplative qualities.
