The Life and Career of Engelbert Willmes
Born in Cologne, Germany, Engelbert Willmes was a multifaceted figure in the nineteenth-century art world. He established himself as a painter, etcher, and art dealer. His formal artistic training began in Cologne, where he was a student of Ferdinand Franz Wallraf at the Zentralschule. Seeking to further his education, he traveled to Paris, where from 1808 to 1812, he studied in the studios of Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Baptiste Regnault, and also attended the École des beaux-arts.
Following his studies in Paris, Willmes returned to Cologne and became active as an art dealer. By 1822, he was operating his own art dealership. His involvement in the local art community was significant; he served as an honorary supervisor of paintings and art objects in the Jesuit building in Cologne starting in 1817. Furthermore, he was a founding member of the Kölnischer Kunstverein, contributing his own painting collection to the organization's inaugural exhibition. He died in Cologne at the age of 80.
