nitsch is renowned as a leading figure of viennese actionism, a short-lived yet influential art movement that spanned the 1960s into the 1970s. his performances, often incorporating theater, multimedia, rituals, and acted violence, were characterized by their use of blood, meat, and other bodily fluids, aiming to provoke and challenge societal norms.
**the orgien mysterien theater (omt)**: nitsch's most notable project, which he conceived in the 1950s, involved nearly 100 performances between 1962 and 1998, featuring real animal carcasses, blood, and religious themes to induce catharsis in his audience.
**collaborations**: notable collaborations include working with yoko ono, gustav metzger, günter brus, otto muehl, wolf vostell, and juan hidalgo at the destruction in art symposium (dias) in london in 1966.
