Cragside

The Origins and History of Cragside

Cragside is a Tudor Revival country house situated near the town of Rothbury in Northumberland, England. The site began as a small shooting lodge, constructed between 1862 and 1864. It later became the residence of William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong, the founder of the Armstrong Whitworth armaments firm. An industrial magnate, scientist, and philanthropist, Armstrong was also an inventor, responsible for the development of the hydraulic crane and the Armstrong gun.

The house served as the home of the Armstrong family until the death of the first Baron on 27 December 1900, at the age of 90. Following his passing, the estate faced various challenges regarding its maintenance and the preservation of its contents. In 1910, a significant portion of the art collection was sold. The National Trust eventually acquired the house in 1977, supported by a grant from the National Land Fund. Since 1979, Cragside has been open to the public.

The Architecture and Building Features

The Tudor Revival structure is a Grade I listed building, having held this status since 21 October 1953. What began as a small shooting lodge built between 1862 and 1864 underwent a significant transformation through the work of architect Richard Norman Shaw. His involvement began in 1869, leading to two distinct phases of enlargement that continued until 1882. This expansion turned the residence into a complex arrangement of rooms and specialized spaces that reflect the inventive spirit of the Victorian era.

Innovation is embedded within the very fabric of the house. It holds the distinction of being the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power. This reliance on hydraulic and electrical systems extends to the most practical corners of the home. In the kitchen, a spit is powered by hydraulics, while the conservatory features a self-watering system equipped with water-powered revolving stands. Beneath the library, a Victorian Turkish bath is situated off the kitchen, offering a private space for relaxation.

The interior is composed of fine furnishings, furniture, and decorative arts that inhabit the various rooms. The architecture provides a specific setting for these objects, where the domestic sphere meets industrial ingenuity. The layout reflects a deliberate integration of modern technology and traditional country house living.

The Art Collection at Cragside

During the Victorian era, the house was filled with wonderful works of art. For thirty years, Cragside functioned as the centre of Armstrong's world, a space where fine and decorative arts were integrated into the domestic life of the estate. The presence of notable designers such as William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Philip Webb, and Edward Burne-Jones shaped the interior character. These artists and their contemporaries provided the aesthetic substance that defined the rooms.

The collection was substantial, reflecting the interests of a man who was both a scientist and a patron. However, this assembly of objects was not permanent. In 1910, the best of Armstrong's art collection was sold. What remains of the original arrangement offers a glimpse into the specific tastes held within these walls during the height of the nineteenth century.
