The History of Hatfield House

The history of this site begins long before the current structure took form. The Old Palace, built in 1497 by Cardinal John Morton, remains as a surviving part of an earlier palace on the estate. This older building served as the childhood home and favourite residence of Queen Elizabeth I. It was within these grounds that the foundations of the estate's long-standing political significance were laid.

The present Jacobean house, Hatfield House, was built in 1611 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury. As Chief Minister to James I, Cecil established a residence that would reflect the prominence of his family. The house is a Grade I listed country house set within a large park. It has remained the seat of the Cecil family for centuries. Today, the estate is the home of Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 7th Marquess of Salisbury.

Architecture and the Jacobean Mansion

The house, constructed between 1607 and 1611, represents a leading example of the prodigy house. It is a prime example of Jacobean architecture, characterized by the formal grandeur of the early seventeenth century. Robert Lemynge served as the main architect for the project, though the design also received contributions from Simon Basil and Inigo Jones. The structure remains a significant presence in the landscape of Hertfordshire.

Inside, the craftsmanship of the period is visible in the specific details of the interior. The Grand Staircase features fine carving that draws the eye upward. In the private chapel, a rare stained glass window provides a quiet focal point for contemplation. These elements reflect the high level of artistry required to build a residence for the Cecil family.

Royal Connections and Heritage

The history of this site reaches back to the 13th century, when the first wooden church was constructed in 1285. The landscape is defined by the Great Park on the eastern side of Hatfield, a space that has long been part of the estate. Much of the history here is tied to the Old Palace, a structure built by Cardinal John Morton, the Bishop of Ely. This earlier palace served as the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth I, and it was within these grounds that she was informed of her accession to the throne in 1558.

The current house remains the seat of the Cecil family, the Marquesses of Salisbury. For over 400 years, the Cecils have held ownership of Hatfield Park, maintaining a continuous presence on this land. The lineage of the family is deeply intertwined with the political and royal history of England, having served as close advisors to the Tudor and Stuart monarchs. The transition from the earlier royal palace to the Jacobean mansion reflects the shifting centers of power during the early 17th century.

Masterpieces of the Collection

The State Rooms hold a profound assembly of objects gathered by the Cecil family over four centuries. Fine furniture and tapestries occupy these spaces alongside a collection of historic armour. There is a quiet weight to the items kept here, many of which are direct mementos from the family's long history. These objects exist as physical remnants of the political and social life that once animated the house.

The presence of Queen Elizabeth I is felt through specific, intimate belongings. Among these are gloves and a pair of silk stockings, which are believed to be the first of their kind in England. Such items offer a tangible connection to the Tudor era. The collection remains a concentrated gathering of the personal effects and treasures that have been preserved within these walls.
