Born in slavery in the hinterland of Paraíba, Inácio da Catingueira was a repentista (an improvisational singer). He worked as a cowhand in cattle, horse and goat ranches. Considered a hero for his involvement in singing contests immortalized in the rural imagination, he became a legend. Until the twentieth century he was still remembered in cordel verses for having won a repentista dispute against a free man that took place in Patos, Paraíba, and lasted eight days.
