Niobe
1966
165.0 x 217.0 cm
Most well-known for his scholarship on Cubism, the Anglo-Mexican art historian John Golding also maintained a dedicated art practice. Aside from early figurative works done in Mexico that resonate with the expressivity of Mexican muralists like José Clemente Orozco and Juan O’Gorman, Golding’s paintings are exclusively abstract. Niobe belongs to his first series of abstractions. The composition balances two shades of blue that darken towards the edges of the painting, an effect heightened by the distinctly geometric composition. The artist’s period of hard-edged abstraction continued into the 1970s in paintings composed of two or three irregular bands of color.
