The Salt and the Studio

Before the brushes and the oils, there was the sea. Charles Roussel began his life with a different kind of discipline, serving as a naval officer. This early connection to the water seems to have left a permanent mark on his eyes. By 1882, he had moved toward the Académie des Beaux-Arts, seeking a different way to observe the world. He set up a studio at 77 Rue d’Amsterdam in Paris, positioned right next to Edouard Manet. It was a place of intense study, where he spent four years under the guidance of Cabanel and Weerts, learning to capture the weight and presence of the human figure.

The pull of the coast eventually became too strong to resist. In the summer of 1882, he traveled to Berck-Sur-Mer on the Normandy coast. The landscape there did something to him. By 1884, he had settled in Berck permanently, opening a studio on Rue Perrochaud. He stayed there for the rest of his life, producing a massive amount of work—perhaps over 2,000 paintings and drawings—all shaped by the light and the salt air of that specific shoreline.

Light and Labor

His work changed as the years passed. At first, his hand was guided by the academic tradition, focusing on the solid reality of people and their forms. But as he watched the tides come in and out, his style shifted. By 1889, he began to lean into a more impressionist approach. He became less interested in hard lines and more interested in how the atmosphere could dissolve a shape or change the color of a wave. He found subjects in the dunes, the quiet valleys, and the small villages of the Normandy region, capturing places before they were altered by too many hands.

His subjects were often the people who lived by the rhythm of the sea:

  • Fishermen returning from the water.
  • Women waiting on the shore.
  • The quiet, heavy labor of shrimp fishing.
  • The shifting light of a sunset over the coast.

A Life in Color and Salt

Roussel was a constant presence in the French art scene. Starting in 1887, he exhibited at the annual Salon des Artistes Français, a commitment he maintained for forty-eight years. His reputation reached beyond France, finding its way to America through the Universal Exhibitions in St. Louis and St. Petersburg in 1904. In 1906, he held a one-man show at the Galerie des Capucines in Paris, displaying 109 paintings that reflected his long observation of the coast. He died in Berck in 1936, leaving behind a body of work that remains deeply tied to the light of the Normandy coast.
