The Dual Life of Henri Robbe
Before dedicating himself entirely to the canvas, Henri Robbe pursued a career in music. He studied music in Paris and Italy, eventually serving as a singing teacher in the French capital. He also performed in concerts, interpreting works such as passages from Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti and the romance C'est une coquette by Louis Clapisson. After returning to Belgium in 1840, he continued his work as a singing teacher in Brussels until 1844, the year he began to focus exclusively on painting.
A Legacy of Still Life
Robbe’s artistic output was characterized by a romantic style, focusing primarily on still life compositions of flowers and fruit. His work often centered on the anatomy of flowers, particularly roses, and was noted for its delicacy, transparency, and poetic touch. His paintings were frequently exhibited at various salons in Belgium, including those in Brussels, Ghent, and Antwerp, as well as international exhibitions in Paris, London, Vienna, and Philadelphia. His notable works have been held in several collections, including:
