Jan Kochanowski: Life and Legacy Early Life and Education Jan Kochanowski (1530 – August 22, 1584) was a Polish Renaissance poet who is widely regarded as the greatest Polish poet before Adam Mickiewicz. Born in Syczyn, Poland, he came from a noble family. His early education was overseen by tutors, and he later attended the University of Padua in Italy, along with studies in France.
