Tietoa taiteilijasta: Carl Ebert
Early Life and Artistic Training
Carl Ebert was born in Stuttgart on 13 March 1821. The early death of his parents shifted his trajectory, but the support of his relatives ensured his path remained within the arts. He secured a place at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, where his technical foundation was built under the instruction of Gottlob Friedrich Steinkopf and Johann Friedrich Dieterich. This formal training provided the necessary discipline for a career defined by the landscape genre.
In 1846, Ebert moved to Munich, a transition that signaled a shift toward more specialized study. He became a private student of Eduard Schleich, focusing his attention on the nuances of the natural world. His development was not confined to the studio; he frequently visited the Alte Pinakothek to study the works of the Old Masters. This direct engagement with established techniques informed his approach to composition and light. His training was a deliberate combination of academic rigor and the observation of historical precedents.
Travels and Artistic Influences
Ebert’s development was shaped by direct engagement with the landscape and the shifting currents of European painting. His time spent at the artists' colonies in Polling and Eberfing alongside Friedrich Salzer and Richard Zimmermann provided a foundation in communal study. This period of observation was interrupted and expanded by his attendance at the Exposition Universelle in 1855. It was during this exhibition that the Barbizon school exerted a clear influence on his approach to the natural world.
His movement through Europe was extensive and purposeful. He accompanied Schleich and Carl Morgenstern on study trips through France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, absorbing the light and terrain of these regions. His interest in the Mediterranean led him to Italy in 1857 and again in 1872. Later in his career, in 1881, he spent several months in Bosnia. These excursions provided the specific topographical data that defined his later output.
