Siegfried Hass was a Danish painter whose life was tied to the landscapes and coastal reaches of his homeland. Born on October 17, 1848, in Kalundborg, Denmark, he moved through the years with a focus on the visual world. He was known by several names, including Siegfred Hass and Sophus Arnold Siegfred Hass, identities that marked his presence in the artistic circles of the time.
His active years spanned from 1868 until 1908. During this period, he worked as a painter, lithographer, and graphic artist. His hands were accustomed to the tools of these various crafts, capturing the light and form of the Danish terrain. He lived through a changing era, maintaining his practice for four decades before his death in Copenhagen, Denmark, on January 29, 1908.
Artistic Works and Subjects
The brushwork often settles on the quiet movements of the Danish landscape. In 1874, he captured a warship positioned by Kronborg at the port side. His focus frequently turned toward the woods and the way light filters through the canopy. He painted a forest scene with a man fishing in a wood stream in 1885, and later, in 1889, he rendered a summer forest scenery with a woman carrying something through the trees. These scenes often include people moving through the natural world, such as in his 1894 work showing forest scenery with people on the road, or his painting of forest scenery with new beech leaves and people from that same year.
Water and its inhabitants appear often in his compositions. He depicted a scenery from a lake with two women in a boat and a river landscape with a path and figures in a rowboat. His interest in the animal kingdom is seen in his 1895 painting of a roe deer. He also looked toward the coast, as seen in his work about a moonlit coastal view with numerous boats and persons, and another view of Tisvilde Hegn.
