A life of ink and official duty

Born in Jinju in 1713, Kang Sehwang lived through the shifts of the mid-Joseon period. His early years were spent with a brush in hand; he began drawing at ten and had mastered calligraphy and poetry by thirteen. The son of Kang Hyeon, he grew up within the influential Jinju Kang clan. While his family was tied to the Namin faction, political changes brought periods of hardship. At twenty-five, facing financial difficulties after his brother's involvement in a rebellion, he moved to a house near Yeomcheongyo Bridge. In a small study called Sanhyangjae, he spent long hours with books and paintings.

His official life did not begin until much later. He entered royal service at over sixty years old, eventually receiving a government post from King Yeongjo in 1773. This duality of roles—the high government official and the scholar-painter—defined his presence in the eighteenth century. Even as he navigated the complexities of the court, he remained connected to the rhythms of nature, finding a sense of ease through the sounds of water, wind, and cranes that he encountered in his art.

The brush and the true view

Kang Sehwang's work is closely tied to the development of muninhwa, or paintings by people of culture. He was a key figure in establishing the 'true view' style, which moved away from idealized Chinese landscapes toward the actual scenery of Korea. His approach often incorporated Western methods, such as shading and perspective, to create depth. He used minute lines and dots to render complexion and utilized chiaroscuro to give form to his subjects.

      His technical interests included:

      • The use of shading to create three-dimensional effects in features like the nose and cheekbones.
      • The application of Western painting methods to traditional Korean ink wash techniques.
      • The practice of sagunja, focusing on the four gracious plants: plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo.
      • A focus on realistic expression through precise anatomical and topographical detail.

He was a teacher to Kim Hongdo, passing on much of what he had learned about capturing the world as it appeared. His landscapes, such as Landscape (Jirakwa-do) from 1761, show mountains and water through a lens that sought to capture the essence of the Korean landscape.

A legacy in paper and ink

Beyond his own hand, Kang Sehwang was an influential art critic and writer. His observations helped shape the artistic milieu of his time. He lived long enough to be inducted into the giroso, the Hall of Elderly Officials, at age seventy-one. His life's work remains recorded in various forms, from self-portraits that show the deep wrinkles of his seventy-first year to travelogues like Songdogihaengcheop, which contains sixteen paintings and three articles documenting his journey to Gaeseong.

His influence extended through his connections with other scholars and painters, including Shim Sa-jeong and Choi Buk. Through these interactions, he helped foster a period where the landscape of Korea was not just observed but documented with a new sense of reality. His ability to harmonize the sounds of his geomungo with the imagery on his walls remains a quiet reflection of his commitment to the arts.
