Life and Work Hieronymus van Aken, also known as Hieronymus Bosch, was a Dutch painter born around 1450 in Den Bosch, Netherlands—the heart of Brabant during the Renaissance. Despite the scarcity of biographical details, scholarly research suggests he spent his entire life in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, where he resided in his grandfather’s house. Little is definitively known about Bosch's formative years; however, archival records indicate he was apprenticed to Pieter Bruegel the Elder, a pivotal figure in Northern Renaissance art who profoundly shaped Bosch’s artistic vision.
