stephen greene (september 19, 1917 – november 18, 1999) was an american artist known for his abstract paintings and in the 1940s his social realist figure paintings. he was born in new york city and attended the national academy school of art and then the art students league. he earned a bfa and a ma at the university of iowa in iowa. he was known for his abstract paintings and in the 1940s his social realist figure paintings. he had several exhibitions throughout his career, including 'stephen greene: a retrospective exhibition of paintings and drawings' at the corcoran gallery of art in 1963 and 'stephen greene: a decade of painting' at the akron art institute in 1978. he died in valley cottage, ny in 1999.
