      A Life Between Continents

William De Leftwich Dodge began his life in Liberty, Virginia. His father worked as an insurance agent in New York, but the family's path led away from the United States early on. His mother, Mary, moved her three children through Munich and Berlin before they eventually settled in Paris. It was in this French atmosphere that the young artist found his footing. He spent years at the Colarossi Academy, working through the rigorous entrance exams for the École des Beaux-Arts. It took him three years and six attempts to gain admission to the school in 1885.

The early years of his career were marked by significant milestones in Europe and America. In 1887, a gold medal at the Prize Fund Exhibition in New York was awarded for his painting, The Death of Minnehaha, a work inspired by the poetry of Longfellow. By 1888, he was showing works like David and Goliath at the Paris Salon. When he returned to America in 1889, he set up a studio at 6 West 14th Street in New York alongside George Bridgman. His presence in the American art scene grew through illustrations for magazines such as Collier’s, Scribner’s, and the Century.

      The Scale of Murals

Dodge found a specific calling in large-scale mural work. In 1891, he traveled to Chicago during the construction of the World’s Columbian Exposition. He worked as an assistant on a mural depicting the Great Chicago Fire and later secured a commission for a dome mural in the administration building designed by Richard Morris Hunt. This project, though funded with only three thousand dollars, helped establish his reputation. His hands moved across much larger surfaces in the years that followed.

His commissions took him to various public and private spaces:

      • The Library of Congress, where he painted Ambition in 1896.
      • The King Edward Hotel in Toronto, for the work The History of Canada in 1903.
      • The 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.

      Later Years and Landscapes

As the decades passed, Dodge's focus shifted alongside his physical strength. The heavy labor required for mural painting took a toll, and after World War I, he began to slow his pace due to illness from overwork. He sought rest in Italy, Mexico, and the American Southwest. During the period between 1900 and 1910, he spent time in the coastal Georgia area near Savannah. In the saltwater marshes of Harris Neck, he painted plein air landscapes of the woods and marshes.

He lived a life that moved between the social circles of New York's Park Avenue and the quiet of Giverny and Setauket, Long Island. He also shared his knowledge with others, teaching at both the Art Students League and Cooper Union. His final exhibition at the Paris Salon in 1934 featured Madonna of the Oleanders. Today, his paintings are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery.
