Life and Artistic Education

Born in Ingolstadt, Germany, Ernst Graupner was the third of six children born to Franz Graupner and Elsa Scharf. His early artistic development began at the Reuchlin-Gymnasium in Ingolstadt under the guidance of drawing teacher Wilhelm Krauß. During his formative years, he maintained a lifelong friendship with his classmate Knut Schnurer. From 1939 to 1944, Graupner pursued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was taught by Hermann Kaspar and Julius Hess. It was during this period that he met Annemarie Baumgartner, a Swiss textile artist, whom he married in 1953. Following the war, he began working as a freelance artist in Munich. In 1953, he and his wife built an atelier house in Munich-Nymphenburg alongside architect Hans Maurer. He had one son, Stefan, born in 1954, and passed away in Munich in 1989.

Artistic Style and Legacy

Graupner’s extensive body of work includes drawings, paintings, and glass paintings. His style was initially characterized by Fauvism, Expressionism, and Cubism, maintaining a consistent focus on figurative subjects. In the final twenty years of his life, his practice shifted toward drawing, a medium he used to translate the exploration of the unconscious into a distinct visual language. His public contributions include various murals in buildings such as the Sparkasse, a kindergarten, the Bundespost, and the Klinikum Ingolstadt. His work has been exhibited in several cities, including Munich, Ingolstadt, Erlangen, Rosenheim, Essen, Ludwigshafen, Hameln, Winterthur, Schaffhausen, Büren a. A., and Bern. His pieces have been acquired by several institutions, including:

He was honored with the Bundesverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse in 1971 and received the Kunstpreis der Landeshauptstadt München (Seerosenpreis) in 1972.
