Born in Montreal, Canada, Marcel Barbeau was a multidisciplinary artist who engaged with various forms of abstraction and art techniques to express himself. He studied under Paul-Émile Borduas at l'École du Meuble in Montreal, where he shared a studio with Jean-Paul Riopelle. Alongside other students of Borduas, he was part of a group known as the Automatistes.
