The Life and Identity of Max Hartwig
Max Hartwig was a German painter who lived through the turn of the century and the early decades of the twentieth. Born in 1873, his life was rooted in the artistic atmosphere of Munich. He remained connected to this city throughout his years, eventually passing away there in 1939.
His identity was closely tied to the landscape, working as a Münchener Landschaftsmaler. This focus on the natural world and the specific light of the region defined his presence in the local art scene. He often signed his works simply as M. Hartwig, sometimes adding a note on the reverse to clarify his connection to Munich.
Artistic Works and Subject Matter
His focus remains on the quiet details of the Bavarian landscape. He worked with oil on wood and oil on cardboard to capture specific views, such as a Bavarian village view. One piece shows a small landscape with houses sitting on a lakeshore, while a village rests on a mountain in the background. These scenes are often small in scale, some measuring up to 18 x 23 cm.
The textures of his subjects vary depending on the material used. He painted Burghausen (?) in Oberbayern, leaving a signature of M. Hartwig on the work. Some of these pieces were noted on the reverse by Max Hartwig from Munich. His hand-signed works often depict the stillness of a lakeshore or the elevation of a mountain village.
