Professional Career and Teaching

The transition from student to instructor happens quickly. By 1899, Maillard has already secured a teaching assignment at the Royal Art School in Berlin. This period marks his integration into the formal academic structure of the city's art scene. His presence in the lecture halls and studios grows as the years pass, leading to his appointment as a Professor of Painting in 1916.

Public recognition follows his academic ascent. He places his work before the public during the Great Berlin Art Exhibitions of 1906 and 1910. These appearances establish his standing within the competitive German art landscape. In 1914, he exhibits with the Free Secession in Berlin, further cementing his professional reputation before the disruptions of the following decade.

The stability of his career shifts during the Second World War. Following an air raid over Berlin in 1943 that destroys both his home and his studio, Maillard moves his family to Konstanz. This relocation marks the final chapter of his professional life, ending in 1945.

Artistic Subjects and Style

Maillard focuses his brush on the fundamental elements of the visual world: portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. His compositions often capture quiet, singular moments. A Nude Woman, rendered in oil on canvas, measures 120 x 100 cm and features vivid blocks of color. This work, left unsigned, suggests a private intimacy, perhaps a study of his wife, Cläre. He moves between the structured stillness of a Head or a Woman with hat and the more fluid, natural settings of a Garden path or a Landscape near Biesenthal. Even in his depictions of Bathing children, there is a sense of direct observation.

The texture of his work carries a specific weight. He utilizes oil on canvas to build form, sometimes leaving a piece appearing unfinished. His approach to color is bold. He emphasizes the essence and charm of the paint itself. This focus on the physical properties of the medium defines his output, whether he is capturing a simple still life or a sprawling outdoor scene. His technique reflects a deep engagement with the material, prioritizing the immediate impact of color and light over decorative flourish.
