Thomas Cole, nato a Bolton le Moors, Lancashire, nel Regno Unito, il 1° febbraio 1801, emigrò con la sua famiglia negli Stati Uniti nel 1818, stabilendosi a Steubenville, Ohio. All'età di 22 anni, si trasferì a Filadelfia e successivamente, nel 1825, a Catskill, New York, dove visse con sua moglie e i suoi figli fino al 1847.
Stile artistico e influenze
Il lavoro di Cole è caratterizzato dalla sua rappresentazione romantica della natura selvaggia americana. Era in gran parte autodidatta come pittore, affidandosi a libri e studiando le opere di altri artisti. Nel 1822, iniziò a lavorare come ritrattista e successivamente spostò la sua attenzione sul paesaggio. I suoi dipinti spesso presentavano la Catskill Mountain House, le famose Kaaterskill Falls e due vedute di Cold Spring.
