The Life and Legacy of Andreas Pavias
Andreas Pavias was a Greek painter and educator from Heraklion, born to a priest named Petros and a wife named Maria, or Marietta. A prominent figure in the Cretan school, Pavias studied his craft under the teacher Angelos Akotantos. His professional life was marked by significant business activity in Heraklion, including the renting and purchasing of houses and warehouses. He was a man of considerable wealth, as evidenced by his ability to leave a substantial fortune to his adoptive daughter, Agnes, which included gold, silver, gems, clothing, jewelry, and enough currency to purchase a house in Chandaka.
As an art teacher, Pavias specialized in icon painting. His instructional reach extended through various contracts, including teaching the son of Angelo Pitzamanos, Niccolo da Napoli, and John Ploraio. He also entered into an agreement to teach reading and writing, alongside painting, to the son of Aquilo Souloum. His artistic output left a lasting mark, with several works surviving today, including his most famous piece, The Crucifixion.
