Eric Ehrström:生涯と経歴

A Life of Craft and Design

Eric Otto Waldemar Ehrström lived a life defined by the touch of his hands upon many different materials. Born in 1881, he was a Finnish artist, craftsman, and industrial designer whose interests stretched far beyond the canvas. His work was not confined to a single medium; instead, he moved between the delicate precision of jewellery making and the structural demands of architecture. He possessed a deep skill for embossing metal and working with enamel, talents that allowed him to shape everything from small plates and textiles to large-scale furniture and buildings.

His early training began at the Finnish Art Society’s School of Drawing. This foundation led him to study under Axel Gallén at Kalela between 1899 and 1900, a period that helped direct his focus toward the arts and crafts movement. Seeking to expand his technical abilities, he travelled to Paris to study the intricacies of metalworking. It was during this time that he met Olga Gummerus, whom he married in 1903. Together, they formed a partnership where art and life were deeply intertwined, as Olga often worked alongside him on various ornamental projects.

The Reach of His Hand

Ehrström’s creative output was remarkably broad, touching many aspects of Finnish visual identity. He was a man of great versatility, acting as a conservator, teacher, curator, and artistic director. Much of his most significant work involved heraldry, where he contributed to the very symbols of his nation. His hands shaped coats of arms, medals, stamps, and even trademarks. As a member of the Finnish Seal and Flag Committees, he helped design the official emblems for a newly independent country, and he even designed the crown for the King of Finland.

Beyond these formal duties, his work often drew from the natural world. He spent time photographing and sketching plants, using the fine details of flora to create decorative themes and ornamentation. His ability to translate the small patterns of nature into larger designs was a hallmark of his approach. This connection to the earth was balanced by his work in more structured forms, such as:

  • Stained glass paintings and frescos
  • Sculptural works and graphics
  • Illustrations for books he both wrote and drew
  • Industrial designs for textiles and furniture

A Legacy in Detail

While much of his work was functional or decorative, Ehrström also left behind personal glimpses into his inner world. His sketches often featured homoerotic themes, including many drawings of women frolicking together. He even had a playful side to his self-perception, sometimes depicting himself as a plump frog watching from the sidelines. This duality—the disciplined designer of national symbols and the sensitive sketcher of private fantasies—shows the complexity of his character.

His professional life was also marked by significant collaborations, most notably with the architectural firm Gesellius, Lindgren, Saarinen. Through these connections, his designs became part of the physical fabric of Finnish architecture. Though he passed away in 1934, the estate he and Olga left behind to the Fine Arts Foundation of Gösta Serlachius ensures that his varied contributions to design and art remain accessible to those who study the history of Finnish craft.
