The Artistic Evolution of Franz Gertsch
Franz Gertsch is a Swiss painter, printmaker, xylographer, and graphic artist. His career is marked by a transition from early works to large-format photorealistic portraits and detailed studies of nature. His first large-sized realist paintings emerged in 1969 with Huaa...!, a work based on a film still of a 19th-century cavalryman. This period initiated a shift toward brightly colored photorealistic works in the 1970s, often utilizing documentary-style snapshots of friends and family. These "situation portraits" captured various subjects, including gender-fluid friends and rock musician Patti Smith.
In his later years, Gertsch's work expanded to include monumental woodcuts. From 1986, he focused on mastering woodcut printmaking, using color expressively to define the relationship between color and three-dimensional space. His process involved time-consuming mixing of mineral pigments, often imported from Japan, and the use of handmade Japan paper. His oeuvre includes various cycles, such as the Jahreszeiten (Seasons) series and works focusing on nature and landscapes.
