A Pioneer of Quebec Art
Marcelle Ferron was a Canadian painter and stained-glass artist who emerged as a major figure in the Quebec contemporary art scene. Associated with the Automatistes, she was one of the original sixteen signatories of the Refus global manifesto. Her artistic journey took her from the École des beaux-arts de Québec to Paris, where she lived and worked for thirteen years. During her time in Paris, she focused on drawing and painting and was introduced to the art of stained glass, an medium for which she would become best known.
Her technical evolution was marked by a significant shift when she returned to Quebec in 1966, dedicating the next two decades exclusively to stained glass. Her work moved beyond the didactic styles of the period, notably through her non-figurative installations in the Montreal metro system.
Recognition and Legacy
Ferron received significant international acclaim when she represented Canada at the VI Bienal in São Paulo, Brazil, where she won a silver medal. Her contributions to the visual arts were further recognized through several prestigious honors, including:
Her legacy is preserved through various public installations in Montreal, Gatineau, and Granby, as well as through the naming of the Centre d'Accueil Marcelle-Ferron in Brossard.
