The Life of Patrick Tuohy
Born in Dublin, Patrick Joseph Tuohy was an Irish portrait, narrative, and genre painter. He attended a Christian Brothers school in Dublin and later studied at St. Enda's School under William Pearse. His formal art education included five years studying under William Orpen at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. Born without a left hand, Tuohy used a metal prosthesis covered by a black glove to hold his painting palette.
Tuohy’s career involved significant historical involvement, as he fought in the Easter Rising alongside his father and was based near James Connolly in the General Post Office. His professional work included commissions for ceiling paintings at Rathfarnham Castle and the La Scala theatre in Dublin. He also taught life class at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art from 1920 to 1926.
