The Life and Artistic Journey of Wilhelm Dürr the Elder

Following the influence of his father, Fidelis Dürr, he arrived at the art academy in Vienna in 1830. His early training focused on genre painting , drawing inspiration from Josef Danhauser , Johann Matthias Ranftl , and Peter Fendi . His artistic direction shifted while working in the studio of Leopold Kupelwieser , where he developed a passion for history painting and turned toward the Nazarenes.

During this time, he was part of a group including Ernst Deger , Franz Ittenbach , Andreas Müller , and Karl Müller . After returning to Baden due to illness in 1843, he settled in Freiburg, where he married Berta Gruny in 1844 and became a founding member of the Ponte Molle artists' society.
