Early Life, Family and Training

Born in the Hampstead district of north London on 2 March 1902, Barry Craig entered a world where the brush and the palette were part of the family's very fabric. He was raised within a lineage of creators, the son of the artist Frank Craig. This domestic environment, steeped in the visual language of his father, shaped his early understanding of the craft. He received his formal schooling at Rugby School, where the foundations of his discipline were laid before he turned his full attention to the study of form and light.

The young artist's path led him to the Slade School of Art, where he spent the years between 1919 and 1924 honing his technical skill. Within those studio walls, he studied alongside a notable cohort of his contemporaries, including Mary Potter and Walter Thomas Monnington. It was during this formative period at the Slade that his hand began to find its specific character. He moved through these years of intense training with a focus that would eventually define his approach to both the human figure and the natural landscape.

Professional Career and Teaching

His ambitions eventually led him far from the familiar streets of London, carrying him across the seas to South Africa. From 1926 to 1933, he occupied a position of significant responsibility as a professor of painting at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town. This period of teaching abroad allowed him to refine his own understanding of form and color while shaping the minds of his students in a different hemisphere.

Upon his return to Britain, he settled into a long tenure at Saint Martin's School of Art in London, where he continued to teach until 1950. However, the onset of the Second World War demanded a different kind of service. He turned his technical skills toward the necessities of wartime, undertaking specialized camouflage work for the British Government. This period of service saw his art applied to the practical, often hidden, requirements of national defense.

The War Artists Advisory Committee recognized his ability to capture the spirit of the era, and in June 1943, they purchased one of his works focused on a camouflage subject. This led to a further commission to document the people tasked with protecting the coast. He was asked to paint portraits of a fire-guarding team stationed in Weston-Super-Mare, capturing the faces of those performing essential duties during the conflict.

Exhibitions and Memberships

The years of conflict brought a shift in the direction of his professional recognition. In June 1943, his work caught the eye of the War Artists Advisory Committee, WAAC, which purchased one of his paintings on a camouflage subject. This recognition was followed by a commission to paint portraits of a fire-guarding team based in Weston-Super-Mare. Such duties reflected the heavy demands placed upon artists during the war, yet they also secured his place within the official record of the era.

As the world moved toward peace, his presence in the London art scene became more established. From 1946, he was elected a member of the New English Art Club, a position that allowed him to exhibit his work with that group on a regular basis. His paintings found their way into the halls of the Royal Academy, and he held exhibitions at the Goupil Gallery and the Cooling Galleries. These venues provided a steady stage for his portraits and his studies of the light in Provence and Brittany.
