Born Else Heintze, this German artist began her creative evolution in the early 20th century. After marrying Otto Hertzer in 1909, she moved to the Tiergarten district of Berlin. Art historians have highlighted her early creative phase, specifically pointing to her powerfully expressionist watercolors from the 1920s. During the Second World War, she received a commission from her hometown to create a series of wall murals depicting the history of Wittenberg for a communal bunker. While her work initially fell into oblivion after her death, a subsequent rediscovery led to a new art-historical reassessment and various exhibitions in locations such as Berlin, Wittenberg, and Füssen.
